Why Not Try Color Business Cards?

The most legible combination of stock and ink color is black ink on white stock. while this is the case, a wisely chosen addition of color can improve the impact of your business card immensely. (More details on full color business cards can be found here.)

Benefits of Color Business Cards

Impact is by far the most significant benefit of using color on your business card. This is why even though scientists claim that black text on a white background is the most legible combination, people still add color to ensure their business card stands out from the crowd.

The Right Choice of Color for Your Business Cards

while colors are attractive to look at, the value added goes far deeper. Colors also have the ability to affect us emotionally and physiologically. (Chromodynamics is a scientific specialization that studies the physiological effects caused by color.) It is important to bear this in mind when selecting colors for your business card; it is not as simple as you may have first thought.

Colors are actually associated with personality traits.  For example, yellow is seen as cheerful, idealistic, imaginative and intellectual - while the WORD "yellow" is also associated with caution and cowardice.

There are color associations to certain events (orange and black for Halloween), images (a black banana is not appetizing) and even entire industries (the red-and-white of a barber pole, the gray of a banker's suit).  Pastel colors are often associated with babies, summer and feminine interests.

Guidelines for Using Color on Your Business Card

  • "Red and Green should never be seen."  An old saying, and not strictly true (red and green occur in nature, as in a poinsettia plant) - but there are a large number of people who have red/green color blindness and have a hard time distinguishing the two colors.  Therefore, making that the main color combination on your card isn't a good idea.
  • Use strong colors in small amounts.
  • The eyes see bright colors first, so use bright colors for text or images that you want to emphasize.
  • Use black or another very dark color for text on your card - it's easier to read and comprehend than colored text.
  • Watch color intensity, too - bright or loud colors are seen as vibrant and often reflect youth or ethnic preferences. Dulled tones indicate mature, established or upper-class tastes.
